OwnScan Privacy Policy
Effective 17 October 2026
OwnScan is made by Karl Turner. This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the app.
The short version
The app doesn't collect any personal data. Your scans are processed and stored on your iPhone or iPad, and they never leave it unless you choose to share them. There's no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
Your scans
- Scans are captured with your iPhone or iPad's camera and LiDAR sensor and processed on the device itself.
- They're saved in the app's own folder, which you can see in the Files app. They are not uploaded anywhere.
- When you export or share a scan, a report or a 3D file, it goes only where you send it, using the iOS share sheet.
- Deleting a scan in the app removes its files from your device. Copies you've already shared aren't affected.
Camera
The app asks for camera access only to capture scans. Camera images are used on the device to build the 3D model and aren't sent anywhere.
Scanning people
People scans are processed and stored like any other scan, only on your device. The app asks you to scan only people who agree to it, and to ask a parent or guardian before scanning a child.
Apple Intelligence and Spotlight
Draft Notes asks Apple Intelligence's on-device model to write report notes from a project's measurements. It runs on your device; nothing is sent to Apple or anyone else. Scan names are added to Spotlight on your device so you can search for them; they stay on the device.
Purchases
The Pro upgrade is sold through the App Store. Apple handles the payment and tells the app only whether Pro has been purchased. We never see your payment details or your Apple Account. Apple's privacy policy applies to the purchase: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
Diagnostics you choose to send
The app has a hidden diagnostics screen for troubleshooting. If you choose to share its report, it contains your iPhone model, iOS version, which scanning features your iPhone or iPad supports, and technical details of your scans (kind, size, date, file types). It doesn't contain scan names, scan contents or your location. Nothing is sent unless you share it yourself.
Crash reports
If you've turned on Share with App Developers in iOS Settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports. You can turn this off at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
Children
The app doesn't collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new effective date.
